about

This is an album of ambient and experimental music performed entirely on an old, battered and barely functioning Jen Piano 73 electric piano. With its limited functions, crackly pots, faulty keys, temperamental volume control, and interference-laden output, I had decided to get rid of my Piano 73 to make room for more useful (and better working) instruments. But before parting with it, I decided to see if I could make an entire album with its four different sounds: piano, mellow, clavi, and spinet.

With the aid of various effects pedals, rack FX units, VST effects, plus the two on-board FX included on the instrument, namely vibrato and phaser, the music and sounds on this album are the result. Limitations can sometimes prove to be beneficial to creativity, and I think this album certainly proves that. Most sounds are hand played but some are sequenced using direct samples I made of the instrument through an Akai S3000XL sampler. The 'wind FX' sounds on 'Follow Your Heart' and 'Lazy Wind' come from the faulty hissing sounds of the Piano 73 output fed through a Korg MS-20 filter.
